OLIVER REED
The Coach House is housed in a 475 year old building situated on the site of the historic Seven Stars public house was given an extensive refurbishment and rebranding three years ago. The Coach House had emerged from the ghost of The Lamplighter becoming Davenports first managed pub in Stratford upon Avon for over fifty years, since The Old Tramway on Shipston Road in the early 1970s!
In a small open alcove in the middle of the pub stands a bust of the Bard of Avon referencing the town’s most famous son. The main room is very bright & inviting with sunlight streaming in through the open doors which open out into a smart garden terrace at the rear of the pub. The covered garden area, with heating appliances, is an ideal space for sitting out in the sun during those warm, bright sunny days. I chose to sit in the snug, on the right-hand side of the pub, which was very comfortable and cosy.
The Coach House has always focussed on home-cooked food using quality, locally-sourced ingredients. Many of the menu choices are paired with a beer suggestion which I think is an excellent idea. It was a Friday on the day of my visit, so I opted for the Davenports Beer Battered Fish & Chips. Hand battered in our own award-winning Davenports lager. Too often when eating out I find the batter is too thick and I end up leaving it at the side of the plate. This batter was very light & crispy, a perfect battering for the fish. My fish was delicious, served with homestyle chips, cooked with the skins still on, lots of mushy peas, a charred lemon, small bowl of tartare sauce and very light curry sauce for dipping the chips! Just perfect. I paired my meal with a Davenports Mild 3.5%. A wonderful, traditional Mild draught beer. It had a smooth, dark complexion with fruity aromas which gave way to a full-flavoured taste & a noticeable sweetness.
My wife chose the Hunters Chicken. Plenty of small pieces of grilled chicken breast topped with candied bacon, melted cheese and smothered in our sweet BBQ Bourbon glaze. Again, served with the homestyle chips. My thought that there was too much of the sweet BBQ Bourbon glaze but admitted that was a personal taste. She would have preferred the glaze in a pot at the side so that she could have put on to the chicken as much glaze as she wanted!
There have been several new additions to the menu. New starters include Sauteed Chilli & Chorizo Prawns, Chorizo & Black Pudding Scotch Egg, Tempura Battered Cauliflower, and a delicious Chicken Tikka Naan with homemade curry sauce. Regulars need not panic; their signature ‘Ultimate Cheesy Garlic Bread’ with pot of melted garlic butter is still on the menu! Their sandwich selection takes the humble lunchtime favourite to another level. Glazed Ham Hock & Cheese, Ultimate Quesadilla and Chicken Tikka Naan Wrap are just a few of the new options to tempt.
I prefer pub food to posh food.
PRUE LEITH
The Pub Classics that one would expect from a Great British Pub are still centre stage, to the delicious Davenports Beer Battered Fish & Chips, Hunters Chicken, which my wife & I enjoyed enormously and a 10oz Sirloin Steak. The mains section also includes BBQ Bourbon Ribs, King Prawn Thai Style Curry and a Wild Mushroom & Parmesan Risotto.
The burgers are a sight & taste to behold! The Candied Bacon & Maple Glazed Cheeseburger is sure to be a winner, as is the Chicken Burger that sees a fried chicken schnitzel presented on a base of cabbage, tomato, pickled gherkins, topped with cheese sauce and slaw. If you prefer to avoid the meat options, try their Wild Mushroom Burger, pressed with wild mushrooms & topped with truffle mayonnaise, truffle cheese sauce and red cabbage slaw! What is there not to like about that?
The Coach House has a lot to live up to. Winning so many awards mean you must elevate, but you also must stay true to your Great British Pub roots! This new menu introduces so many flavours and dishes that people love from Chicken Tikka Naan to handmade Chorizo & Black Pudding Scotch Eggs, but it honours the classics too which is very important. Our dishes look tempting, but more importantly, there is a whole host of substance and flavour behind the great looking dishes!

Dogs are very welcome at The Coach House, in fact they have their own section of the bar! Paw your dog a drink! A water chiller, silver dog bowls, treats, snacks, nibbles and a `Think Pawsitive` dog mat greets all of your canine friends. The central bar is well-stocked with popular spirits and boasts a fantastic cocktail menu all of which I was told are freshly made to order. A major focus at The Coach House is on excellent quality food & the use of locally sourced ingredients.
The Coach House is a very pleasant pub in which to relax for a pre or post – theatre drink or meal if you are visiting the town for a play at the nearby RSC theatre. Whilst sitting in the bar enjoying my meal I noticed several people coming in off the street, not only to eat but to sit and enjoy a drink, read the newspaper or chat with friends. You can also watch sport on one of the televisions or listen to live music on occasions!
It is still very much a local for the community as well as the many visitors. Whatever you like, whatever the season, The Coach House is sure to have something on the menu to satisfy your appetite. For fabulous food, friendly service and quality ales, in a local friendly pub, The Coach House is a great choice.
I like The Coach House, the staff are always very friendly, polite & professional. I urge you to check out the new menu & loyalty card at The Coach House at the earliest opportunity when you are next in Stratford Upon Avon. You will not be disappointed!
