An Evening of Magic with Kev G – Magician

Everyone loves Magic! I was recently invited to a charitable evening to help raise money in aid of Children in Need. Fortunately, I was not expected to dress up as a small yellow bear or lie in a bath of baked beans, sing for my supper, dance with both legs tied together or any of the other crazy, but worthwhile, things people volunteer to do, to help raise money for such a good cause.

What I had been invited to was an evening of Magic performed by a young, dapper, award-winning magician, going by the name of Kev G – Magician, who had offered his services for the evening for free. Before I arrived I had childhood memories of magicians pulling rabbits out of top hats with glamorous assistants floating around but fortunately the world of magic has moved on into the twenty first century and I enjoyed one of the best evening`s entertainment I have had for a long time.

Kevin is a close- up magician, so I was expecting to be able to see the swift transfer of a card from up or down the sleeve or from behind the ears. It was not to be! Kev G is a quality magician, combining sleight of hand movements and a wonderful sense of humour, using a range of items including the indispensable pack of playing cards, a Rubik’s Cube, coins, miniature spirit bottles, foreign currency notes and even his own wallet! Kev G moved easily around the small groups at the party quickly holding their attention with his very own unique style of magic, mind reading and showmanship, ensuring all of the guests had an amazing time.

Whenever we watch professional magicians like Kev G we are always secretly trying to work out how the trick was completed. On one occasion expecting him to ask me to place down another playing card, I thought I had outfoxed him and said I would be most impressed if that was my card, pointing to an unturned card face down on the pack. Needless to say, it was my card and we were all amazed and marvelled at the magic.

There were a couple of other tricks which left me speechless, at one point he ate a playing card which had been marked by a tear in the corner by a member of his audience, he then took a drink and washed it down before giving someone else a chocolate bar to unwrap. Unbelievably, after the chocolate bar had been unwrapped, then broken in two, the playing card which had been chosen, marked, then eaten, appeared inside the chocolate bar! Words simply failed me!

Kev G is a professional magician having been a member of the prestigious “Magic Circle” for several years, so he was not going to share any of his secrets with me. He has also created a number of magical effects which have been used by other famous magicians around the world and on television, some of which he performed for our group that evening. We were all thoroughly entertained throughout the evening,completely enthralled, mesmerised and captivated by his magic and his likeable, amiable personality and manner.

As the evening drew to a close I was able to speak with Kevin about what drew him into the Magic Circle.

“ My magic journey started about 20 years ago when I was shown a card trick, which I couldn’t explain. Having watched TV magicians such as David Blaine, Paul Zenon and Derren Brown I was very quickly hooked on a path which has led me to where I am today. Over the years I have worked extremely hard at polishing my skills so I decided to enter some competitions to see how I would fair. Many hours of planning and preparation paid off as I won my first close-up club competition, which then gave me entry into the well-regarded Midlands Champion of Champions. This competition pits all of the midlands club winners against each other to be crowned the best close-up performer in the Midlands, which I won! My philosophy is all about sharing magical moments with others and creating memories that will stay with them forever.
