Barbados the birthplace of rum – Mount Gay is more than a Rum!
During my cruise around the Caribbean I visited The Mount Gay Rum Heritage & Visitor Centre in Bridgetown, Barbados, the birthplace of Rum, for a tour of the world’s oldest commercial rum distillery established in 1703.
I started with a Rum punch with my enthusiastic & knowledgeable tour guide informing my group all about the history, distillation, ageing and blending techniques which have been perfected over the last 320 years to produce the islands finest spirit. After watching a short film, I was then taken to the tasting room where I was given generous samples of four or five of their finest rums to taste.
There are no short measures at Mount Gay!
The tour lasted about an hour and although no rum is produced on site, their rum is distilled in St. Lucy, Barbados, I found the tour to be of great interest & the tastings even better!
The staff were very friendly and helpful and there was also a pleasant shaded outdoor bar and lunch area to sit and relax in.
The gift shop was well stocked with souvenirs and the essential bottles of the Mount Gay Rum.
You do not have to be a rum enthusiast to appreciate the tour, it was also an education about Barbados and the working lives of the people.
I really enjoyed it.
I would fully recommend a visit to the Mount Gay Visitor Centre if you are cruising the Caribbean and find yourself in Bridgetown.
Just turn up, no need to book!
